Five years ago community organizations decided to organize an event to welcome newcomers to Halifax. This event has grown into the 5th Annual Community Potluck & BBQ for Newcomers and Residents that I had the pleasure of attending last year. I not only helped with the planning of the event but also greeting guests, cooking corn and serving hot dogs. It was a lot of fun!
I was delighted to see newcomers being and feeling welcomed to our community! Since I am an immigrant myself, I know how it feels to leave one’s home for a new home. So, what a great idea to integrate newcomers and residents into the community.
For three hours that day the Halifax Commons became quite a multicultural place! It was interesting to hear the many languages spoken. I remember hearing kids ask for a hot dog in the few English words they knew and then running to their parents to recount their exploits in their native language. Who could imagine, representatives from different cultures were standing before me…all sorts of people from communities I had never visited. I felt so lucky to exchange smiles with them and be able to talk to them and welcome them.
This year the event will take place at Sullivan’s pond on Saturday, July 31st from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
You can be sure to find me there again helping out and I look forward to seeing the more than 200 people enjoying themselves and feeling welcomed into this great community! Everybody is welcome!
Bring a dish to share, a blanket and enjoy the company of others. To reduce waste, we encourage you to bring your own plate and utensils.
